2008 WUC Badminton: Finals

As the 2008 WUBC came to an end it’s time to make an overall analysis of the tournament. The Asian dominance was clear, with the Asian countries taking all the gold medals home. China got away with two gold medals in the final day. Entering the final day of competition there were still five gold medallists to be known. The finals brought to the Sports Arena of Gualtar a lot of public to watch the games which gave a great atmosphere to the final day of competition.
Mixed Doubles
The first game started with both teams very nervous. Thailand was stronger, and took advantage from its opponent’s mistakes, and won the first game by 21-16. In the second game the mistakes were less. Thailand players were winning by 11-6 at the break. But in the second half of the game, Taipei athletes played well and won by 24-22. In the last game, Taipei started better, but after the break the great recovering of Thailand made them win by 21-18, and the World University Championship of mixed-doubles category.
Women’s Singles
Yihan Wang retained the world title after defeating in the final of the Women’s Singles Competitions the Korean athlete, Kim Mun Hee, by 2-0. The number one of University Ranking started the final very concentrated and dominating the first game, and won by 21-10 without any problem. Kim Hee began the second game very well but couldn’t stop Whan. Taking advantage of personal mistakes made by Kim Hee, Whan won by 21-7. Yaha Whan didn’t lose any game and is again the World University Badminton Champion.
Men’s Singles
Pengyu Du conquered the gold medial in Men’s Singles of the 2008 WUBC. The Chinese needed more then an hour to defeat Yu-Hsing Hsieh, from Chinese Taipei, for 2-1. It was an exciting final where both players gave everything. Du left the court in physical difficulties. The beginning of the match was much equalised. After the short technical break, the Chinese made fewer mistakes, closing the game by 21-17. In the second game, Hsieh saw his opponent make a lot of unforced errors. The player from Chinese Taipei won the second game by the same result. In the crucial game Pengyu quickly reached some advantage. But, when the score was 13-6, in his advantage, he needed medical assistance. Although, he had a physical problem in his legs, the Chinese athlete controlled the game. At the final, the result 21-11 guaranteed the gold for China.
Women’s Doubles
The doubles from Thailand Voravichitchakul/Aroonkesorn, and from Japan, Nakahara/Sekiya, played the final of women’s doubles competition. The match was dominated by the Thai team. Although the efforts of the Japanese players, Thailand won two games (21-11; 21-17). After the first place in the mixed doubles, the athlete from Thailand, Voravichitchakul and Thailand won the second gold medal in this tournament.
Men’s Doubles
The Indonesian pair Bona Septano/Mohammad Ahsan only needed about 25 minutes to defeat the Korean team Gi Hoon Han/Tae Il Han. The match was completely dominated by the Indonesians. In the first game, Septano and Ahsan have always been leading since the first minute. The same happened in the second game, with the Indonesians getting an advantage of 10 points and at the middle of the game 11-1 was the result. The Koreans reacted but in the final, the Indonesian double won by 21-12, winning the golden medal.
