2008 WUC Baseball: Update

The opening match of the Czech Baseball Cup in Brno on October 5th, 2007 was the first opportunity for the organizers of the 2008 World University Baseball Championship to present the state of preparations of this event. The presentation took place at the new Brno City Stadium, where the final game of the 4th WUBC will be played on July 27th, 2008. The President of the Organizing Committee of the 2008 WUC Baseball Petr Ditrich welcomed all guests and co-organizers of the meeting: the Czech University Sport Association and baseball team Draci AVG Brno. The President of the Czech University Sport Association František Dvorák threw the ceremony pitch of the game.
Lucie Vladyková from the Organizing Committee talked about the communication with foreign participants. She highlighted the experiences of the Czech Baseball Association with the organization of the European Championship which was one of the most successful baseball events. She also mentioned the previous WUCs Baseball in Italy, Chinese Taipei and Cuba. “Our task is difficult as we follow the Championships in countries, where baseball is the sport number one. We will not be able to compete with luxurious hotels in Chinese Taipei, neither with 10-thousand-spectator stadiums in Cuba. Our asset must be a great organization and a friendly atmosphere for all participants. To this corresponds the motto of the WUBC: Pleasure comes before business.” The President of the Organizing Committee assured the guests that the preparations go on as planned. Participants will be divided into groups by the FISU in the first quarter of 2008. “The importance of the Championship is obvious due to the cooperation and help of many key organizations and personalities. Their support and often personal participation testifies the potential of the WUBC. In the last year before the Championship we would like to do our best not to fail and prepare an event that will be a celebration of baseball and will promote all participants.”
The delegation of Brno was led by the First Deputy-Mayor, Ms. Barbora Javorová. She appreciated the choice of Brno as the organizing city and promised a significant help with the organization. Also other members of the local authorities were present at the event, Mr. Oliver Pospíšil, Mr. Martin Ander, Mr. Michal Bortel and Mr. Josef Haluza. The Vice-President of the Czech Sports Association Mr. Vladimír Šimíèek stated he is highly satisfied with the preparations. The Deputy-Mayor of Ostrava Poruba Mr. Miloš Mlèoch confirmed that the Championship is being prepared also in other cities. He appreciated the support of Mr. Sergey Bubka, who has been a participant of an athletic competition “Golden Spike” in Ostrava. Mr. Michal Charvát for MU Brno and Mr. Jiøí Havel for MZLU Brno spoke for the cooperating universities. The final toast was made by Mr. Pavel Mokrý, the President of the Football Association of the Czech Republic.
After the presentation the participants watched a game of the Czech Baseball Cup between Draci AVG Brno and VŠK Technika Brno. The presentation of the WUBC and more photos from the event are available at www.baseball.cz/wubc2008.
