2008 WUC Women's Futsal: Day 3

September 10th, 2008

Chile vs. China

Chile vs. China: 3-8

Team China had an easy task against Chile as the Chinese women dominated the pitch winning 8-3. Nevertheless it was a passionate game and Team Chile did its utmost to bridge the gap. Due to this goal difference Team Uruguay is qualified for the next round and Team Chile strands on the 9th and last spot in the championship’s ranking.

Iran vs. Paraguay: 2-3

Team Paraguay had a difficult task getting past Team Iran’s strong defence. Twice the Iranians were in the lead and twice Team Paraguay tied into the second minute trailing behind its opponent. Finally the South Americans confirmed their supremacy by winning the match 3-2 and closing the preliminary round on top of their pool.

Brazil vs. Portugal: 3-1

Although it was a match that didn’t matter as both team were already qualified for the next round, the sisterly game between Portugal and Brazil was a beautiful match to watch. Nice passes and great actions with a final score of 3-1 in favour of the host team. Tomorrow the quarter finals will be played as follows: CHN vs. IRI MEX vs. POR PAR vs. CRC BRA vs. URU

Giant TV screens outside the venue

The WUC has an enormous success which has largely surpassed the wildest dreams of the organisers. The OC had to contract a security service to channel the crowds and it has placed giant TV screens outside the stadium so the people who cannot get in also have the opportunity see a nice spectacle. Two TV stations are following the event live as well as an important number of journalists of the written media.

Nevertheless all the media attention, the fair-play among the girls hasn’t changed. There is a great student-atmosphere between the teams and addresses are changed constantly as well as fraternizing with a lot of pictures taken. The OC and the CISCA also had another reason to build a party as it was the birthday of John Warnock, the FISU Technical Chair for Futsal/Football.
