Today, October 8th, a Canadian delegation visited the FISU Headquarters in Brussels to deliver a letter of intent of the city of Edmonton to host the 2015 Summer Universiade. The delegation consisted of Dr. Mike Mahon, Vice-President of the Canadian Bid Committee and Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education & Recreation of the University of Alberta; Candice B. Stasynec, Associate Vice-President and Executive Director, Office of the City Manager of the City of Edmonton; Dale Schulha Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics at the University of Alberta; John Barry, Secretary-General and COO; Nicole Poirier, Associate COO and Joe Morissette, Director of the CIS international program, CIS being the Canadian NUSF member of FISU.

Dr. Mahon presented the letter to FISU Secretary-General Eric Saintrond. Also present for FISU were FISU Treasurer Bayasgalan Danzandorj, Director for the Summer Universiade Marc Vandeplas and Media Officer Christian Pierre. Edmonton has successfully hosted numerous international sporting events in the past including the 1978 Commonwealth Games, the 1983 Summer Universiade, the 2001 World Championships in Athletics and the Edmonton Grand Prix. The city has received letters of support from the Canadian national and provincial governing bodies of the sports on the SU program and all three levels of government (national, provincial and municipal) agreed unanimously to support Edmonton’s Universiade bid.

‘It is our intention to develop our summer sports’, Dr. Mahon stated. ‘Calgary and Edmonton are the two important cities of the Alberta province. Calgary has always been promoted as a big winter sport city. With hosting the Winter Olympics in 1988, the University of Calgary became a centre of excellence for winter sports. Whereas Edmonton being considered as a summer sports city the Universiade would leave a legacy at the University of Alberta as a true centre of excellence for summer sports.’ ‘We believe very much in the continental associations’, Joe Morissette said. ‘And we want to play an important role being a leader in developing university sport in the Americas. It’s time to bring the Universiade back to the American continent.’
