2008 WUC Rowing Dominated by Poland

Under some extreme difficult circumstances – a leaden sun and temperatures of almost 40°C – the finals of the 10t World University Rowing Championship took place yesterday afternoon on Lake Ada Ciganilja en Belgrade, Serbia. In spite of these harsh conditions, Poland dominated the competitions taking home six of the thirteen championship titles at stake. The Polish NUSF has always considered this WUC as a high level event and has never hesitated to send its best student-rowers, like its eight’s crew for instance, which ended 5th at the recent Olympics in Beijing. A surprising performance came from the Swiss who qualified with five boats in the finals and returned home with two gold and two silver medals. In the medal ranking they are followed by the Dutch and Romanians who take home five and four medals respectively. In total thirteen countries divided the 39 medals at stake. The good collaboration between the OC of this event, UB2009 and the Serbian Rowing Federation are looking very promising for next year when rowing will be an optional sport at the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade.
