2008 WUC Rowing: Update
September 7th, 2008
The 13 finals of the 10th World University Rowing Championship will take place under a leaden sun reaching temperatures of almost 40°C. 18 nations will try their best to climb the podium in the next hours. Poland, which succeeded in qualifying 12 of itsd 13 teams, is without doubt one of the dominating countries at this event here in Belgrade. It is also very interesting to see a group of Six nations represented by 5 or 6 crews in the finals. This means a large distribution of medals and will increase the interest of our member associations for the rowing championship and might be a good omen for a participation record at the rowing competition next year at the Belgrade Universiade as rowing will be one of the optional sports there. The OC of this WUC can be satisfied. They already made the WUC a success and whole Serbia will be able to witness as the finals will be broadcast live on national television and a program of one hour will be aired on the Eurosport channel this Monday. Some stats for the finals so far: Number of qualified teams per country: POL: 12 GBR: 8 NED: 7 ITA; GER; ROU: 6 FRA; SUI; SRB: 5 HUN: 4 CZE: 3 NZL; FIN; AUT; CRO: 2 AUS; EST; IRL: 1
