30th General Assembly

August 6th, 2007

Thai Minister of Education Prof. Dr. Wichit Srisa-an opens the FISU General Assembly

Bangkok - From August 5th to 6th, FISU held its 30th General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand, host city of the 24th Summer Universiade. The Assembly was opened by the Thai Minister of Education Prof. Dr. Wichit Srisa-an. During the General Assembly, the representatives of the Member Associations listened and approved the reports of the President, Secretary-General, Treasurer, Auditor and the strategic review of the Challenge 21 Group. The General Assembly also accepted three new Member Associations bringing the total number of MA to 144: - Bhutan (BHU); - Dutch Antilles (AHO); - Montenegro (MNE).

The Local Organising Committees of the future Summer Universiades, Belgrade 2009 and Shenzhen 2011, as well as the future Winter Universiades, Harbin 2009 and Erzurum 2011, presented their progress reports to the Assembly as well as the final report of the 2007 Winter Universiade in Torino. However the main issue of this General Assembly was the election of the new Executive Committee for the period 2007-2011. As you know, the Executive Committee shall be composed of members elected by the General Assembly of FISU and by the Presidents of the Continental Organisations having the status of Associate Member of the FISU (according to the new statutes approved by the General Assembly, art n°7.1 and 7.3). This was a way to include the Continental Federations within the FISU EC as Associated Members. If a President of a Continental Organisation is elected as a FISU Executive Committee member, this continental organisation can be represented by a member of its Executive Committee (that's the case for Mr. Hassan Chikh who's FASU President and for Mr. Zhang Xinsheng who's AUSF President). After a long session of ballots the new Executive Committee was elected out of 69 candidates. It is clear that the General Assembly wants the Executive Committee to continue its work as George E. Killian and Claude-Louis Gallien were re-elected as President and 1st Vice-President respectively, as well as most of the Assessors. Newcomers in the EC are Luciano Cabral (BRA), Oleg Matytsin (RUS), Omar Al Hai (UAE), Hisato Igarashi (JPN), Verena Burke (GER) and Peninnah Kabenge (UGA). With the adition of the latter two assessors the number of women in the EC is now four.
