Ambassadors Visit FISU HQ
June 6th, 2007

Recently, Mr. Richard Kinchen and Mr. Brian Nason, respectively the British and Irish Ambassador for Belgium visited the FISU Headquarters in Brussels to meet with FISU Secretary-General Roch Campana and FISU Director-General Eric Saintrond to explain the new British-Irish agreement on citizenship relating to the participation of British and Irish athletes in FISU events. The Agreement states as follows: ‘(…) The British and Irish Governments, in a new British-Irish Agreement recognise the birthright of all the people of Northern Ireland to identify themselves and be accepted as Irish or British, or both, as they may so choose, and accordingly conform that their right to hold British and Irish citizenship is accepted by both Governments and would not be affected by any future change in the status of Northern Ireland. (…)’ FISU is happy with this development as it will avoid a lot of red tape in the future.
