2008 WUC Golf: Day 3

September 5th, 2008

The third round on the Gary Players Golf Course in Sun City was fascinating and exiting again. Both in the men's and ladies’ team ranking the leadership changed again. Whilst in the ladies’ tournament Switzerland (451) took the lead ahead of the United States (452), but only with one shot less that the US Team, played Japan's men's team better than the leading Italian crew. Japan with Sonoda (71), Usami (70) and Kobayashi (75) realized the best team score in the first three days with 216 shots. Italian's Leonardo Motta played another 72 par, like the day before, but Niccolo Quintarelli (75) couldn't repeat his very good score (70) from the 2nd round, and the third Italian player Francesco Bonaga finished with 79, which brought Italy to 226 shots, totally 9 points more than the leading trio from Japan.

Leonardo Motta (ITA)

In the men's individual ranking Leonardo Motta (ITA) is still leading, since the first day, 6 shots ahead of Japanese player Shunsuke Sonoda, who improved his score every day. Great Britain's Andy Shakespear could hold this third place, but Ion Garcia from Spain played two under par and is only two shots behind him, together with Quintarella (ITA) and Usami (JPN). Normally it will be difficult for the follower to catch up the leading Italian Leonardo Motta in today's last round, but for the Silver and Bronze medal the game is still open.

In the ladies’ third round Swiss player Nathalie Tanno had the best score with 73 shots which brought her from the ninth to the third position with a total of 228. The leading female players Marion Ricordeau - she improved in the second round with one under par, scored 76 in the third round and took the lead - and Caroline Rominger from Switzerland, who scored 80 points yesterday, summarize an intermediate total of 227. Laura Crawford and Katie Tewell, both from the US, are just behind them with 229. Like in the men's championship the final fourth round will also decide on the medal standings in the ladies’ tournament. The last day of this very good World University Championship promises again an exciting round before finishing with the Medal presentation and the Closing Ceremony.
