10th WUC Badminton in Braga: Opening and draw of the Teams

The FISU delegates were warmly welcomed at the airport where the organizers had set up a booth with volunteers. It is true that for about two weeks, the city of Braga and, more specifically, the University of Minho has been living to the rhythm of badminton. Indeed, FADU and the organizers are making the most of this World University Championship to also organize a great number of national events. The campus of the University of Minho is now completely absorbed by the spirit of the championship; more than 150 volunteers from different high schools of the region have come to help out the organizers. Moreover, this event is a great way to develop the sport of badminton in Portugal. Then, during the championship, it is worth nothing that the international referees will also take the opportunity to organize seminars and classes for national referees who will be able to benefit from a great international experience. CIC delegate, Alan Sharp, in collaboration with the new Portuguese CIC member, Fernando Parente, proceeded to the accreditation of the delegations. Indeed, the latter is also a member of the Organizing Committee.

Mrs. Alison Odell, FISU Assessor, chaired the CISCA meeting which was held yesterday evening. In attendance were: Roger Johansson, CT Chair Badminton; Roland Questel, CMI Member; Pedro Dias, FISU Assessor and OC Vice-President Fernando Parente, OC Secretary General and CIC member; Laurent Briel, Director of the WUC Ronny De Vos, International referee; Bernardo Deiceiro, Technician The different points linked to the organization of the championship were reviewed in detail by Mrs. Alison Odell who also listened to the presentation of the technical aspects relating to the running of the tournament. To finish, Pedro Dias took the floor to make a follow-up report of the event and was followed by Fernando Parente who described in detail the Opening Ceremony.

The General Technical meeting took place in one of the lecture halls of the University of Minho. Mrs. Alison Odell, Fisu Assessor and CISCA Chair, introduced the members of the CISCA and of the Organizing Committee. She then proceeded to the roll call of the delegations. Under the direction of Mr. Roger Johansson, CT Chair Badminton, Mr. Ronny De Vos proceeded to the draw of the teams’ tournament and explained in detail the organization of the tournament. Then, new CM Member, Dr. Roland Questel, accompanied by Dr. Magalhaes, gave some specific information on the medical aspects and doping control of the championship. Pedro Dias, FISU EC Member and OC Vice President, explained how the Opening Ceremony was going to be held and later answered the different questions regarding transportation, internet access, accommodation, etc … The Opening Ceremony of the WUBC was held yesterday at 9pm in the Sports Complex of the University of Minho. The Opening Ceremony started with the Portuguese national anthem and with the march pass of 23 countries which was followed by the speech of Roque Teixeira, OC President.

Mrs. Alison Odell, FISU EC member, welcomed all the participants and invited the Rector Antonio Guimaraes Rodrigues to officially declare the 10th World University Championship open. “Badminton promotes links between academies around the World as well as friendship. This year it has reached a record number of participants and countries”. The World University Badminton Championship is the first sport event recognized by the Portuguese government as an event with the statute of usefulness publishes”. The FISU flag was hoisted while the Gaudeamus Igitur was played. The athletes’ and the referees’ oath were also conducted. An Honor Commission Diner was held prior to the Opening Ceremony which was a pleasant dinner between the members of the CISCA and of the Organising Committee as well the members of the Portuguese Government and representatives of the City of Braga. The President of the Portuguese Badminton Federation Joao Martins was also attended.
