February 4th, 2008

F.l.t.r.: Roger Roth, Lars Karlsson, David Fitzpatrick & Milan Augustin
Newly elected FISU Technical Chair for Ice Hockey Mr. Lars Karlsson (SWE) set up a work session between FISU representatives Mr. Roger Roth, Chair of the Technical Committee, Mr. Milan Augustin, Director for the Winter Universiade and IIHF Sport Director Mr. David Fitzpatrick. The meeting took place in ice hockey powerhouse Sweden last weekend. The working session took place during the European Women’s Champions Cup Ice hockey in Stockholm where the FISU delegates witnessed the strongest women’s teams in Europe and their excellent skating skills as well as a men’s ice hockey game of the Elite League in a sold out Globe arena in downtown Stockholm. The main topic of the meeting was the addition of women’s ice hockey on the Winter Universiade program, which will take effect at the 24th Winter Universiade in Harbin, China (February 18th to 28th, 2009). For the first time in the history of the Winter Universiade a Women’s tournament of maximum 8 teams will be organized, alongside the Men’s ice hockey tournament of maximum 12 teams. The FISU and IIHF delegates discussed the recruitment of the referees and linesmen for the WU, as well as the implementation of the new IIHF rules. The outcome of the discussion was very satisfying for both parties. A next meeting between FISU and IIHF is foreseen at the IIHF Headquarters in Zürich, Switzerland.
