2008 FISU Forum: Update

The participants of the 2008 FISU Forum in Krakow, Poland
On July 1st, the Opening Ceremony of the 9th FISU Forum – hosted in Krakow, Poland – took place, in the Auditorium Maximum of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Mr. Killian and his colleagues of the FISU Executive Committee (Mr. Gallien, Mr. Bergh, Ms. Odell, Mr. Matytsyn, Mr. Omar Al-Hai, Mr. Gualtieri and Mr. Jakob) and the CESU members were welcomed by the Vice-Minister of Sports, Mr. Zbigniew Pacelt; the President of the National University Sports Federation of Poland, Mr. Marek Rocki, the Vice-Mayor of Krakow, Mrs. Elzbeta Lencznarowicz; the Rector of the University, Mr. Karol Musiol and of course by Mr. Marian Dymalski, the FISU Executive Committee member from Poland.
Besides the representatives of the 44 countries participating to this Forum the Opening ceremony was also attended by all representatives from the local branches of AZS, the National University Sports Federation of Poland. The FISU Forum is launching the activities that are going to take place during the academic year of 2008-2009, celebrating the 100th anniversary of AZS.

The CESU members
The two main presentations of the first part of the Opening Ceremony were made by Marek Rocki on the birth of AZS and then Mr. Gallien presented the main subject of this Forum “University Sport: Roots, Strengths and Challenges”. Topic A, “The WHY of University Sport and its different models”, was presented by Alison Odell. This subject is giving the opportunity to the Associate members of FISU to present their activities. The two first presentations were on the European University Sports Association (EUSA) and the African University Sport Federation (FASU).

For EUSA, its President Alberto Gualtieri (ITA) took the floor together with its Secretary-General, Matjaz Pecovnik (SLO) and two members of the Student Commission, Ms. Iris Olberding (GER) and Karolina Rohan (POL). For FASU, Leopold Senghor from Senegal, former FASU auditor and CESU member spoke on behalf of FASU President Hassan Chikh (ALG). The afternoon was dedicated to the working sessions of Topic A. Five groups were established.
