2008 WUC Weightlifting: Closing Ceremony

The Closing Ceremony of the inaugural World University Weightlifting Championship ended a week of great competitions. This first edition was indeed a success and surpassed all expectations. 37 countries represented by more than 200 high level athletes nearing a multitude of records. To end the WUC in beauty, the Greek Minister of Education attended the closing ceremony.

'First of all I would like to congratulate all the athletes that came here for this historical 1stWorld University Championship. I'm sure that all of you were very happy to be here in Komotini and I hope that you had a good stay in this city. Of course I would also like to congratulate the winners. We had very exciting competitions and I'm very proud to see that Weightlifting is growing and is becoming very popular in Universities around the World. As you know there is no Championship without volunteers so let me take this opportunity to thank all the people who were taking care of you (and me) during these days. Let me thank the Organising Committee for its work and especially the Vice Rector, Mr. Savas Tokakidis.

And finally, I would like to thank the International Weightlifting Federation represented by Mr Attila Adamfi for its collaboration and support. All of you have worked hard both in the preparation and during this championship so I would like to invite you to enjoy the party tonight. See you for sure in 2010 for the second World University Weightlifting Championship. And now I declare officially the 1st World University Weightlifting Championship closed.'
