Mr. Nenad Bogdanovic, Mayor of Belgrade, died last Thursday, age 53, after several months of battling cancer, and was buried yesterday in the Alley of the Great in the presence of many officials, colleagues and grateful citizens of Belgrade and Serbia. Mr Bogdanovic had been Mayor since 2004 and had contributed significantly towards Belgrade’s development in the last three years. Apart from his efforts and results in the Serbian Capital’s infrastructure and social development he also gave a tremendous contribution in Belgrade’s win to host the 25th Summer Universiade for 2009. As the city’s Mayor he was present in Innsbruck in January 2005 when Belgrade and Serbia won the bid as the future hosts for 2009, and he was one of the co-signatures, together with Mr. Jasnic and Mr. Sostar, upon signing the official contract with FISU. As the highest representative of Belgrade he recognised the importance and opportunities of the Universiade and the impact it will have on the student sports in Serbia. The role of Belgrade Mayor will now temporarily be taken over by the President of the City Assembly, Mr. Milos Perovic.
