August 1st, 2007
Canadian Interuniversity Sport, as the Canadian representative of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU), announced the athletes and staff who will represent Canada in taekwondo at the 2007 Summer Universiade in Bangkok, Thailand. Canada will send a team of 10, including five male and female athletes to compete in the five day event. Only one athlete will return for his second consecutive trip to the Universiade representing the red-and-white. Nathan Crockford (McGill University) of Montreal, Que. participated in the 2005 games in Izmir, Turkey. He will be joined this year by his sister Brigitte Crockford (Collège Rosemont), who will compete in the fly weight class. Leading the way on the women’s side is Mississauga’s Shannon Condie (York University). Condie, ranked second in the country, will bring some international experience to the group after attending the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 19 year-old picked up a silver medal in the competition earlier this month. No Canadian has won more than one match in the short history of taekwondo at the Summer Universiade. South Korea topped the medal count in the sport at the last games with a total of 11 medals. Other members of the 2007 Canadian squad include flyweight (59kg) John Chan (University of British Columbia) of Richmond, feather class fighter Rowshyra Castaneda (McGill University) of Montreal, Hani Raouda (Herzing College) of Montreal and Michelle Ge (University of British Columbia) of Vancouver, Elliot Bogusz (University of British Columbia) of Port Moody, B.C., Magdalena Szczotka (University of Alberta) of Edmonton and Reg Lawrence (Memorial University of Newfoundland) of Conception Bay South, Nfld.
