Member Association News: CAN Announces Table Tennis Team

The current No. 4 player in the country and her twin sister highlight the six-member table tennis team that will represent Canada at the 2007 Summer Universiade in Bangkok, Thailand (August 8-18). Sara Yuen (Ottawa, Ont.), ranked fourth in nation by the Table Tennis Association of Canada, will be joined by her twin sister Stephanie and fellow women’s player Cynthia Paulin (Montreal, Ont.) at the 24th Universiade. Sarah, who has a number of key wins over strong European opponents, will be looking to move one step closer to her goal of qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China when the team travels to Thailand in August. Stephanie, a Finance major at the University of Ottawa, will compete alongside Sara in the women’s team, singles and doubles competition. She will also partner with fellow Canadian Todd Gregory in mixed doubles action. Paulin will join the Yuen’s in the women’s team and singles play before partnering with Michael Nguyen in mixed doubles. The men’s side features the top student table tennis athletes in the country. Derek Wong (Ottawa, Ont.) and Todd Gregory (Charlottetown, PEI) will compete with teammate Michael Nguyen (Montreal, Que.) in the men’s team and singles competitions before partnering for men’s doubles. Wong will join Sara Yuen for mixed doubles, while Gregory will partner with Stephanie in the same competition. Wade Gregory (Charlottetown, PEI), who is also Todd’s father, will serve as Team Leader for the six-member Canadian squad. Canada begins the first stage of team competition on August 10. Doubles play begins on August 13, followed by the singles competition on August 14. The last time Canada participated in Table Tennis at the World University Games was in 2001 in Beijing, China when it was an optional sport.
