FISU President Awards First Gold Medal
FISU President George Killian awards the first gold medal of the Bangkok Universiade
Chinese athlete JIANG Qiuyan defended her gold medal from Izmir (2005 SU) with success. However, the Chinese who clocked a Universiade record in Izmir with 1:33:13 did not succeed in bettering her time putting a 1:35:22 on the clock but crossed the finish line two minutes before her contenders. Silver went to Itallian MONGELLI Lidia (1:37:23) and YURCHANKA Sniazhana (1:37:26) had to settle for the bronze. It was FISU President George Killian who awarded the Chinese athlete with the gold medal, being it the first gold medal of the games to be awarded.

European Champion Swims Swiss Uni History
Great Uproar in the Swimming pool today as Swiss swimmer Flavia Regamonti, the number two in the World ont he 1,500m and current European Champion on the same distance getting ready for the 800m freestyle setting her mind on nothing less than gold. The Swiss champion, who told the press to be delighted to be here in Bangkok also revealed her competition program, participating in no less than four races: 400m, 800m, 1,500m freestyle and 4x200m relay. And Flavia delivered! Clocking a 8:25.59, breaking the Universiade record and swimming a personal best here in Bangkok. Flavia also writes Swiss University history as she is the first to win a gold medal in university swimming for Switzerland. Flavia will be part of the Swiss Team for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
