3rd World University Woodball Championship

Kampala, Uganda - August 22nd to 26th, 2010

The dynamic Ugandan University Sports Association organized its first WUC in the lovely town of Kampala.  A ground breaking success.

Woodball is a new sport at FISU that is still looking for its fans. Nevertheless, the Ugandan University Sports Association decided to apply for the organization of the 3rd WUC in this discipline. Woodball is very popular in certain Asian countries, so the location in Africa was advantageous for promoting the sport, unlike the edition scheduled for 2008 in Bulgaria that had to be cancelled for lack of participants.

The Ugandan University Sports Association, which is very active nationally and regionally, did a great job for its first participation as an organizer of our championships. The games were held in Kampala – specifically in the Speke Munyonyo resort on Lake Victoria. Participants enjoyed ideal conditions for woodball, as well as a magic environment in what many consider the "Pearl of Africa".

Like the two previous editions in Taipei City in 2004 and Bangkok in 2006, the championship drew 11 nations: Estonia, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, Indonesia and of course Uganda: three continents, with good representation for Africa. In all 55 athletes (31 men and 24 women) joined the 7 categories of the 4-day tournament: men's and women's singles and doubles, mixed doubles, and finally men's and women's teams. His Excellency Professor Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya, Vice-President of Uganda, officially launched the championship in a very colourful opening ceremony.

To put it mildly, Chinese Taipei dominated the competition. It came home with the lion's share of 5 gold medals out of 7! Indonesia, Hong Kong and the host country shared what medals remained.

Chinese Taipei's excellence does not come by chance – the game was invented there by Mr. Ming-Hui Weng, who is the current president of the International Woodball Federation. He was on the spot in Kampala to help the organizers and to do his best to promote his sport on the African continent.

A gorgeous closing ceremony rounded off the 4-day championships.

The flag was handed back to FISU that day, since we do not know when the next edition will take place.
