History by Fritz Holzer
Skisport at Universities has a long tradition. As long ago as the early 20th century, academics were organising ski competitions in Cross Country and Alpine Skiing. In Alpine Skiing the British and Swiss academics were forerunners in developing today's Slalom and the Downhill race. Until then, the International Ski Federation had only organized Cross Country and Ski Jumping World Championships.
Before the first Winter Universiade took place in Chamonix, France in 1960, several University Ski Championships were organized in Alpine countries as well as in the former Czechoslovakia and in Poland. The forerunners of Winter Universiades were called “Akademische Winterspiele”. Others had been regular National University Championships on a bilateral basis. Some countries also visited Norway, Spain, Sicily, USA and Canada for student ski races. After the Universiade of Chamonix the racers wanted to produce an annual racing-calendar in order to coordinate the dates of the National University Championships. During the first few years this happened unofficially and irregularly. Charles Fabre of France created the FISU-points system, simular to the FIS points. These points were very important for the starting list of the competitions. Today only FIS-points are used at all FISU races.
There emerged a desire to hold an annual Skimeeting. A FISU-commission for Alpine and Cross Country Skiing was created and the annual FISU Skimeeting was born. The items on the agenda were the Calendar, the Regulations for University races, the reports of the previous year's races and an exchange of experiences. In order to get FIS-points at University races the International Ski Federation founded (1983) a Subcommittee of University Racers. At that time members of this FIS-subcommittee were Roessner AUT (Chair), Clavadetscher SUI (Alpine Skiing), Holzer SUI, (Cross Country Skiing). The Commission was instrumental in establishing the use of the FIS points system for the FISU ski races. The FISU-Ski Commission and the FIS-Subcommittee of University Racers have a history of productive cooperation.
Skimeetings for Alpine and Cross Country Skiing have been organized regularly since 1978. The FISU Ski Commission is current composed of Hans Falsehr GER (Alpine Skiing), Zofia Kielpinska POL (Cross Country Skiing) ans Roger Roth SUI (Chair).
