2013 Universiades Attributed!

May 31st, 2008

Stefan Bergh,Chair of the EvCom SU presents his report

Today, May 31st, the FISU Executive Committee attributed the 2013 Winter and Summer Universiades in Brussels, Belgium, home of the FISU Headquarters. The ceremony took place at 8 pm at the Theatre of the Plaza Hotel in the city centre. During the day, the candidate cities had the opportunity to deliver their final presentation.

Three cities applied for the organization of the 2013 Summer Universiade, i.e. Kazan (Russia), Gwangju (Korea) and Vigo (Spain). For the Winter Universiade we had only the city of Maribor (Slovenia) after the withdrawal of Almaty (Kazakhstan).

Leonz Eder, Chair of the EvCom WU presents his report

The two Evaluation Committees (for the WU and SU), consisting of members of the FISU Executive Committee, spent a fair amount of time this spring inspecting the various cities mentioned above. Clearly, the result of these inspections did not make the job any easier for the members of the Executive Committee who had to take a decision about the allocation of the upcoming Universiades. In fact, the applicant cities all had very good assets to put forward, but in sports there’s only one spot on the gold medal podium … and for 2013 the gold goes to Maribor (Winter) and Kazan (Summer).

Maribor, Slovenia, Host of the 2013 Winter Universiade

Headed by the Slovenian Minister of Sports Milan Zver, alongside the Mayor and Vice-Mayor of the candidate host city, the delegation of the Maribor bid was well prepared when it entered the arena, having been there in 2007 when they lost the 2011 bid to Erzurum, Turkey. A stronger and more mature bid this time and a proven track record in organizing all sports featuring on the WU program, the major Slovenian city was granted the rights to host the 2013 Winter Universiade. More info on the host city can be found at www.universiademaribor.org.

Kazan, Russia to Host the 2013 Summer Universiade

Having also been a candidate in 2007 for the 2011 Summer Universiade, but losing it to Shenzhen, China, the Kazan bidding committee opened all registers to make a last thundering performance. While the Evaluation Committee met the President of the Russian Federation, Mr. Medvedev, in Moscow during their ‘road trip’ to Kazan, the Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov was present in Brussels, together with the Prime Minister of the Tatarstan Republic, Rustam Minnikhanov as well as the Head of the Federal Agency for Physical Sports and Culture, former Olympic and World Champion, ice hockey legend Vyacheslav Fetisov, the Mayor of Kazan, Ilsur Metshin and the Vice-President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Mr. Victor Kotochkin. The dazzling hi-tech presentation, the very strong bid with more than fifty venues already in place for the Games and the huge experience in organising international sporting events (more than 30 in the last 2 years), the FISU EC granted the city of Kazan the rights to host the 2013 Summer Universiade.
