Competition area
The first competition day in the XVIth World University Orienteering Championship is over, the Champion titles are taken by Czech Republic and Switzerland. The Men's distance was 3,13 km with 17 controls, women had to run 2,68 km and take 16 controls. For Tomas Dlabaja it took only 13 minutes and 29,1 seconds to complete the distance. Second place, Vasa Taanila from Finland, was behind 10 seconds (13.39,7) and the third, Scott Fraser from United Kingdom was behind almoust 14 seconds (13.42,9). The Women University World Champion in Sprint Distance Seline Stalder commented her race: “I am very satisfied with my race and I could focus on my task all the way. I made only one small mistake with the 2nd last control and I am happy that I could take the victory. Two years ago I was 2nd at the WUOC Sprint Distance behind Dana (Brozkova). I’m looking forward to the other challenges of this week.”
Men's Sprint Gold Medallist Tomas Dlabaja (CZE)
Tomas Dlabaja had won 3 times in a row Sprint distance in Czech Republic Championships in Orienteering, two weeks ago he attended World Orienteering Championships and Tomas said he had some problems with finding a motivation for WUOC. “Despite of that I wanted to run a really good sprint distance, while I did not reach my maximum on this years international title competition. The course was almoust as I expected and after the spectator’s control the race became interesting. I made no mistakes, so I am satisfied with my race and gold medal is a pleasant bonus,” said the Men's Champion and he added: “I am going to run also long distance and relay, but it will be a really tough to succeed in Estonian terrain, which seems to be quite difficult.”
Women's Sprint Gold Medallist Seline Stalder (SUI)
Seline Stalder from Switzerland won the Women's Sprint Distance gold medal. The Champion's time was 14 minutes and 25,9 seconds. Only 2 seconds behind was this years World Champion in Orienteering Dana Brozkova from Czech Republic (14.28,0) and the bronze medal was won by Ester Gil Brotons from Spain (14.42,4).
74 men and 67 women started today, 2 of them did not get a result. The Competition Centre was on Tartu Singing Arena today, the track was mainly planned to the Tähtvere park and therefore competition was very easy to follow. It was fun for public and it was a challenge for competitors to stay focused. The Championships are organised by the Estonian Academic Sports Federation, OC Põlva Kobras and Estonian Orienteering Federation. Official website of the Championships can be found at www.easl.ee/wuoc2008 and includes both startlist, finish protocols and live competition comments each day.
