2008 WUC Boxing: Finals

September 29th, 2008

Heavy 91kg: Viktor Shvarkov (BLR) vs. Vasily Levit (KAZ)

The first gold (Light fly 48 kg) goes to Russian Lenar Fayzeriyev

The bout turned to be very close. Kapezov used his semi-final against Ganzorig as a warming-up for the final (ended with the score 25:1 in his favor), and was quite ready for his battle for the gold. The happy champion answered our several questions immediately after the bout was over. Congratulations with the gold medal. Was it difficult to gain it? What bout seemed more difficult for you: either semi-final or the final one? 'My final opponent was more powerful, comparing to my semi-final opponent. I used to fight against him several years ago in Kazakhstan. The last time we met, I lost to him 20 points. So, this time I realized my chance to do both: to pay back for my previous defeat and to acquire the Champion's title. I’m very pleased with the fact, I’ve done both.' Did you like fighting at home? As far as I remember, you used to take part in the Junior Championship of Russia, several years ago took place in Kazan… I was not so lucky in that Championsip. Nevertheless, I like competing at home, it helps me a lot in my fights. Today I heard the public supported me, and this was a good feeling.'

Marat Bariev, Minister of Youth, Sports & Tourism Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan

Minister of Youth, Sports & Tourism Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan satisfied with WUC Boxing

The Minister of Youth, Sports and Tourism Affairs of the Republic of Tatarstan, Mr. Marat Bariev, was quite satisfied with the results of the 3rd World University Boxing Championship. You’ve been to the Beijing Olympics this year. Could you please compare the level of these two competitions? 'It happened so, that I've been to boxing Olympic tournament just once, while here I had the opportunity to visit a number of bouts. I can say, that the sports level of the competitions is quite similar. Tthe Kazan bouts were of no less intensity than in Beijing. By the way, a number of coaches of the national team of Russia are in Kazan to watch the new generation of boxers and they confess, the boxing, demonstrated here, is really worth watching.' Did anyone believe, that Tatarstan may acquire two gold medals, when Kazan declared its intention to host the 2008 WUC Boxing? 'We entered our bid in 2006. As a matter of fact, we didn’t set the purpose for ourselves to acquire medals. Although we did much job to enter the Tatarstan boxers to the National University team of Russia, and are quite happy with the fact that two of our athletes won gold. I’m especially happy for Alexander Zhirnov, who had been so long proving the hopes set for him and proved them at least. We will try to help our Boxing Federation and our boxers financially, and I’m sure, the results will be improvingly better. We’ve got good infrastructures, sportsmen and coaches.'
