Local Boxer Qualifies for Final
Kazan boxer Alexander Zhirnov (weight category up to 64 kg) won his semi-final bout thus qualifying for the 3rd World University Boxing Championship final. He defeated his opponent Anatoly Navichok from Belarus. Have you ever seen about one hundred soldiers rushing from their places in order to greet just an ordinary lieutenant? One could watch this scene in “basket-hall”, the WUC competition venue, when the students of the Kazan Military Tank College were cheering for their fellow student Alexander Zhirnov. No surprise, the Kazan boxer proved the hopes set for him and started his bout actively. Gaining 4:0 advantage in the 1st round, Zhirnov prolonged his success in the 2nd one - 5:2. The starting success made him loose concentration in the 3rd round so that the Belarus boxer was at a hand to play back the difference – the result of the round was 9:6 still in favor of Zhirkov. Although the host boxer didn’t lose initiative and made a series of 7 successful blows. As a result, his semi-final victory with the score 13:6. Anar Jafarov from Azerbaidjan will be Zhirnov’s opponent for the final bout for the gold. Jafarov in his turn defeated Almasbek Alibekov from Kazakhstan – 10:6. Maxim Dvinsky and Viktor Batalov have also qualified to the final preserving excellent chances for the victory for the hosts.

A number of guests of honor of the 2008 WUC Boxing in Kazan watched the semi-final bouts, among them there were Alexander Lebzyak, head coach of the National team of Russia, together with multiple international tournaments prize-winners Raimkul Malakhbekov and Andrey Mishin.
