New Korean President Expresses Support for Gwangju to Host 2013 SU

On March 21, 2008 South Korea’s new president, Lee Myung-bak, visited Gwangju Metropolitan City which is one of the candidate cities for hosting the 2013 Summer Universiade. President Lee promised the Korean government's full support and collaboration for hosting the 2013 Universiade. In his first official visit as President to Gwangju, President Lee met with Mayor Park Kwang-tae and said, "The Korean government will provide full support to bring the 2013 Universiade to Gwangju." President Lee added, "Gwangju is an international city with a wide range of sports facilities and has successfully hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Its citizens are strongly committed in showing support to hold the 2013 Universiade. Gwangju is capable of successfully hosting the 2013 Universiade and the government will establish relevant policies for universal sports development." “It is very significant that Gwangju, the city of democracy and human rights, has projected to host the 2013 Universiade. This will be a golden opportunity to display not only the spirit of friendship and unity for world youth but to promote the biggest, grandest and highest level of sports festival for peace,” explained President Lee.
