2009 WU Update: Inspection Visit in Maoer Mountain

Today, February 26th, the FISU delegates visited Maoer Mountain Ski Resort. Maoer Mountain Ski Resort is the branch competition area of the Winter Universiade constructed on the basis of the Alpine skiing teaching and training center of Harbin Institute of Physical Education (HIPE), and will serve as the venue for the snowboarding and biathlon competitions of the 24th Winter Universiade. For meeting the needs of the competitions, the construction projects of four competition facilities have been launched.
Main Cableway for Maoer Mountain Alpine Skiing Slopes
The main cableway is a world-advanced combined installation of the 6-person gondola lift and 4-person chairlift designed and produced by Leitner Ropeways from Italy. The cableway is 1,375 meters long, has the transportation capacity of 2,400 persons/hour, operates at the speed of 5 meters/second, and is equipped with 10 6-person gondola cabins, 70 4-person chairs, wind-proof screens, and electricity-heating chairs. The project was started in May 2006 and completed on November 30th in the same year. This cableway will serve as the transportation means for the athletes, coaches, referees, the working staff, officials and spectators attending all snowboarding events including Halfpipe, Big Air, Parallel Giant Slalom and Snowboard Cross.
Construction of Snowboarding Halfpipe and Big Air Venues
The snowboarding halfpipe course is 230 meters long and 50 meters wide with the length of the standard part at 172m, the upper width is 25m with the bottom width at 15m and the average slope at 18 degree with the in-run length 20m and the finish area at 30m. There is a resting room for athletes and coaches on the top, a judge stand at the bottom and a 210-meter T-bar ropeway system on the right side. The project was started in May 2006 and put to use in October 2006. It is recognized by FIS as the highest halfpipe venue, and can service Olympic Games and World Cups etc.
With a length of 200 m and a width of 30m, the Big Air venue is the first ever in China, made of in-run, jump, landing, finish area and judge stand. The project was started in September and finished in October 2007. It is also homologated by FIS together with the Halfpipe, Parallel Giant Slalom, Snowboard Cross venues, which can service highest-level games such as World Cup and Olympics.
The brand new Biathlon venue
Biathlon Venue Project in Maoershan
Designed by Mr. Ublado Prucker, technical expert for Biathlon venues, Maoershan Biathlon venue consists of a shooting range with 30 electro-mechanical targets, cross-country skiing courses of the lengths of 1.5km, 2km, 2.5km, 3km, 3.3km and 4km respectively as well as an Auditorium accommodating 3,000 people. The project was started in May 2006, with the venue project finished in November 2007 and the installation of electro-mechanical targets completed in February 2008. The venue will reach the advanced level in the world and can service the highest-level games such as Olympics and World Cups.
