2008 WUC Squash: Day 3

August 24th, 2008

El Welaily vs. Alana Miller

The first semi-final in the women’s tournament was an exciting game. Emma Beddoes (GBR) lost after the five games battle against N°1 of the tournament and N°10 of the World Abdel Kawy (EGY). After three games Beddoes leads with 2-1 but Kawy comes back on track and at the end squeezed Beddoes who missed the opportunity to win against this great player. Anyway, it was the first time during the tournament that the Egyptian player was so close to elimination. The second semi-final match of the women’s individual event should have surprised everyone if Alana Miller (CAN) would have been able to win more than one game against the N°26 of the world Raneem El-Welaily (EGY). After losing a first game she turns on the higher level of her game and won in four games 3-1. Therefore, the final in the women’s tournament will be an all Egyptian battle.

Ramy Ashour

The first semi-final in the men’s individual event was absolutely under control of N°4 on the world ranking Ramy Ashour (EGY). His opponent from Malaysia, Nafiizwan Adnan played very good squash with the long ends but he was not even able to scramble one game. Final score 3-0 for the Egyptian. Only Egyptians - this is the slogan of the Individual events. Second semi-final of the men’s event was a battle of the second and third seeded players. The answer was given very fast because N°2 of the men’s event was probably not on his best and N°3 of the seeding Tarek Momen won after an exciting game 3-1 against Omar Mosaad. Tomorrow during the awarding ceremony we should see three Egyptian players on the podium.
