CANADIAN GOLF COACHES APPOINTED FOR DEBUT AT 2007 SU IN BANGKOK, THAILAND

Canadian Golf Head Coach Ray Chateau

Canadian Interuniversity Sport, as the Canadian representative of FISU announced its coaching staff for men’s and women’s golf, which will make its Universiade debut at the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand (August 8-18). Ray Chateau, who led Canada at each of the past two World University Golf Championships, will serve as head coach, while Robert Dubeau will be an assistant. Chateau, head coach of Humber College’s varsity golf program, previously served as head coach and team leader at the 2006 World University Golf Championships in Turin, Italy and men’s coach for Canada at the 2004 WUC Golf in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. Under Chateau in 2006, the men’s squad placed fourth, while the women’s team was 13th. In 2004, the Canadian men finished 10th. “I am excited to return to the international stage and coach the Canadian team,” said Chateau. “With the men’s fourth place showing last fall at the World University Championship in Torino and the continuing development of our golfers and programs across Canada, I am confident that our teams will be in the medal hunt in Bangkok.” Chateau’s teams at Humber have won seven Ontario College Championships (four men’s titles, three women’s titles) and six Canadian College National Championships (five men’s titles, one women’s title). In 2005, he secured an RCGA Birdie Fund Grant ($25,000 per year) becoming one of only six Canadian Universities or Colleges to receive funding from the RCGA. Chateau holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario (1990), a Graduate Diploma in Sports Administration from Concordia University (1992) and an MBA from York University (1999).

Dubeau enters his third season as head coach of McGill’s golf program. He has a long and storied athletic administration career. A member of McGill’s interuniversity sport program since 1968, Dubeau served as the school’s Director of Athletics from 1976-2005. He was Team Canada’s Chef de Mission at two World University Games (Edmonton in 1983 and Palma de Mallorca, Spain in 1999) and Assistant Chef de Mission at the 1979 (Mexico City) and 1981 (Bucharest, Romania) World University Games. A member of the Canadian Olympic Association since 1976, Dubeau was Assistant Chef de Mission for Team Canada at the Olympic Games in Albertville, France in 1992.
