FISU Executive Committee Meeting: Day 1

Today, January 14th, the first day of the FISU Executive Committee meeting was held. After the report of the President, the Secretary-General and the Treasurer, the floor was given to the Organising Committees of the next Universiades.

2007 Winter Universiade

Mrs. Nebiolo is confident the Universiade will be excellent. The snow could be better but next week snow is expected as it is cloudy and snow will be soon there. General Manager Andrea Ippolito gave an overview of the countries which already arrived in the Village mounting up to 39. So far 2,673 delegates were accredited. Participation wise this Universiade can already be called a success. The Athletes’ Villages are overbooked therefore the Synchronised skaters will be lodged in the Nikelino Hotel. However, they will have their meals in the Village, to keep the Universiade spirit for these athletes alive.

2007 Summer Universiade

With the political changes in the government, the Thai cabinet has decided to provide full support in organizing the Universiade, restructuring the OC and approving the necessary budget. The government also ensures the safety for Thai people and foreign nations. The Organisation Committee moved to new offices: the Langsit centre. The Supreme Board was appointed as well. It includes 14 committees and sub-committees. Thai Airways informed that all accredited athletes and officials can be offered 75% from the economy ticket full fee (50% for business and first class) but registration should be done through the UBOC office. Countries have to submit the numbers of participants to UBOC as soon as possible. Due to the recent bombings in Bangkok, safety measures in airports and public places are tightened. UBOC will monitor the situation and tighten security and safety measures to ensure all Universiade participants a safe arrival and departure. Some 17,080 volunteers applied. A selection process is to be done by this month, the orientation program will start in February.

2009 Winter Universiade

The market development of the 24th WU in Harbin, China is actively under way. The competition arrangements have been carefully planned and organized. The OC made a number of recommendations to be thought over by the FISU EC. The logo and mascot were submitted as well as the 2009 WU theme: ‘Youth, Future, Ice and Snow’. Harbin implemented a series of key projects, altogether some 96 projects in road and bridge construction, landscape renovation and road network upgrading have been accomplished.

2009 Summer Universiade

The delegates of the Belgrade 2009 Organising Committee introduced some new members of the OC to the FISU EC. The Human Resources Department of the OC is really taking a huge flight as by the end of March the final plan of staff will be worked out. The volunteers’ project has also been launched. In May 2006 a contract was signed for the new HQ which is located in the heart of Belgrade. A definite list of venues has been put together: 42 for competition and 28 for training. Accreditation will be available via mobile phone, providing users’ convenience. Co-operation and Planning Group ‘Challenge 21’

After the progress reports, the floor was given to the Co-operation and Planning Group ‘Challenge 21’ for their report. The delegates presented the latest version of the action plan and the summary of the activities of the FISU Staff. 30% of the actions introduced in action plan are finished.
