CA News: Creation of ODUPA

Yesterday, June 11th, in Blumenau, Brazil, the 16 countries present created the Continental University Sport Association of America with the name of Organización Deportiva Universitaria Panamericana (ODUPA). Where also present from America, the presidents of two regional university sport associations, Mr. José Balsinde Herrera, ODUCC (Organización Deportiva Universitaria Centroamericana y del Caribe) and Mr. Julio Jakob, COSUD (Confederación Sudamericana Universitaria de Deportes). President of the NUSF of Brazil Mr. Luciano Cabral, the host, was also the moderator of the meeting.

After having agreed to constitute ODUPA, and worked on the final version of the statutes, the representatives of the NUSF of America elected their board. Its composition is as follows: President Julio Jakob (URU) 1st Vice-President Sotero de Jesús Vasquez Aracena (DOM) Vice-Presidents Jose Antonio González Treviño (MEX) Jean-Guy Ouellette (CAN) Secretary-General Eduardo Ramirez Lenci (PER) Treasurer Rosaura Méndez Gamboa (CRC) 1st Assessor Alvaro Leiva (CHI) Assessors Alberto Gilardoni (PAR) Eduardo Fuente Bonilla (ESA) Jose Balsinde Herrera (CUB) Clovis Morales (HON) Jacobo Bucaran (ECU) Roberto Joanilho Maldonado (BRA)

FISU was represented by five members of its Executive Committee: the President, Mr. George E. Killian and four other members R. Campana, R. Outeiriño, P. Dias and S. Jasnic. The staff representative was K. Gjeloshaj. The leaders of some NUSFs and Continental organisations were also in attendance. The President of the European Association , Alberto Gualtieri, Mr. Shen Zhen representing the Asian Federation, Mr. Carlos Rosa Lopes, President of NUSF of Angola, Mr. António Montalvo de Lamo of the NUSF of Spain and Mr. Paulo Ferreira President of NUSF of Portugal.

The second part of the meeting was dedicated to the presentations. The first speaker was Mr. R. Campana, with a speech on the FISU history and perspectives, Mr. Rafael Gil Salinas (CEDU Board and vice-rector of Valencia University) presented a study entitled ‘Iberian America in the FISU. A strategic position’ and finaly the host, Mr. L. Cabral, President of the NUSF of Brazil, presented the recent developments and the projects of its Federation, CBDU.
