2007 Winter Universiade: Canada Announces Alpine Ski Team

Alpine Canada Alpin has selected 12 athletes who will represent Canada at the 2007 Winter Universiade to be held in Turin, Italy from January 17th to January 27th, 2007. In total six men and six women will be part of the Canadian team on the slopes of the Italian Alps: WOMEN’S TEAM JEAN Sandrine (1984 - Club Alpin Val Neigette - Université de Montreal) EMPEY Allison (1985 - Calgary Alpine Racing Club - University of Alaska, Anchorage) DURHAM Jennah (1985 - Carrabassett Valley Academy - Williams College) O’FLYNN Taryn (1985 - Rabbit Hill Ski CLub - University of Nevada, Reno) MCELROY Carmel (1987 - National Alpine Training Center - Montana State University) DAKERS Jessica (1984 - National Alpine Training Center - University of New Mexico) MEN’S TEAM ZYROMSKI Nicolas (1983 - Mont-Tremblant - Université Laval) LACAILLE Olivier (1987 - Mont Sutton - University of New Mexico) BARNES Cameron (1983 - Banff Alpine Racers - University of Nevada, Reno) DAVIDSON Johnny (1981 - Ottawa Ski Club - University of Vermont) VAN ROON Alexander (1985 - Camp Fortune - Montana State University) HUME Scott (1982 - Whistler Mountain Ski Club - University of Nevada, Reno) The delegation will be led by ACA’s Coaching Education Director Richard Lepage (Boucherville, QC). Lepage will be surrounded by colleagues Bettina Callary (Ottawa, ON), the technical events Coach and Marie-Pier Jourbain (St. Jérome, QC), the speed events Coach. The 2007 Winter Universiade will showcase Alpine Skiing’s four official disciplines – Downhill, Super G, Giant Slalom and Slalom, and a medal will also be awarded to the athlete with the best all around score. The technical disciplines will kick start the event with the Giant Slalom on the 19th and 20th of January 2007 and the Slalom on the 21st and 22nd. The speed events will end the alpine competition with the Downhill races on the 24th and the Super G races on the 25th. Alpine skiers will be lodged in the athletes’ village located in Bardonecchia, Italy. The team of coaches selected the athletes according to ACA’s following policies and guidelines: - Selected athletes were selected according to the first FIS points list of season 2006-2007 and all other FIS race results occurring before December 1, 2006; - Selected athletes were selected in accordance with their world ranking in Giant Slalom plus their next best discipline; - Selected athletes were selected in accordance with their past racing experience in speed events; - Selected athletes were selected in such fashion to ensure that at least one male and one female come from the QSSF Ski Championship - the only ski championship circuit sanctioned by one of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Regional Association. The QSSF chose their athletes within their own selection criteria. - Selected athletes all have a valid FIS card; - Selected athletes have participated in a minimum of two regional FIS races during the 2005-2006 season and two, or more, during the 2006-2007 season.
