2008 WUC Orienteering: Update

The 16th World University Orienteering Championship (WUOC), will be staged in Tartu, Estonia and its vicinity from July 28th to August 3rd, 2008. The organisation of this FISU event will be a first for the Estonian Academic Sports Association (EASA). After the World Cup races, World Junior Orienteering Championship and European Orienteering Championship the WUOC will be another important world event in orienteering that is going to be held in Estonia. The city of Tartu, with its population of 101,246 and area of 38.8 square kilometres, is the second biggest city in Estonia. Situated 185 kilometres south of Tallinn, it also represents the centre of Southern Estonia. The River Emajõgi, which connects the two largest lakes in Estonia, flows 10 kilometres within the city limits and adds colour to the city. The first written records of Tartu date back to 1030. Here is also the oldest and the largest university in Estonia – the University of Tartu (UT), founded in 1632. Current number of students at the University of Tartu is 17,500, i.e. almost 1/3 of all students in Estonia.
