FISU EC Attributes 2011 Universiades

Today, January 16th, in its third day of session, the Executive Committee attributed the 2011 Winter and Summer Universiades. The whole day, the bidding candidates have one hour left to show their assets for staging the 2011 Universiade… and they did. Each candidate gave a stunning video presentation and political authorities came to Torino to promote their city.

2011 Summer Universiade
2011 Summer Universiade candidate Kazan (RUS) broke the ice with its presentation. Besides the Mayor of Kazan, Ilsur Metshin and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, Russian Minister of Sport and old time ice hockey great and former Olympic champion Viacheslav Fetisov took the floor to promote the Russian city. Then the floor was given to Kaohsiung (TPE). Former Olympian and current Minister of Sport, Mr. Chen Chaun-Shou and Minister of Education Mr. Tu Cheng-Sheng were present to promote the 2009 host of the World Games to bring the 2011 Universiade to the island. Next was Shenzhen (CHN) represented by its Mayor Xu Zongheng and Vice-Mayor and the Governor of Guangdong province Mr. Huang Huahua promoting the aspirations of the 26-year old city.
The Murcia Delegation
After break the floor was given to Murcia (ESP). The Mayor and Deputy-Mayor of Murcia, Mr. Miguel Angel Camara Botia and Miguel Cascales Tarazona were present to promote their city to the EC. Final candidate for the 2011 Summer Universiade was Poznan (POL), who brought Former President and Peace Nobel Prize Winner Lech Walesa as its most prominent promoter, as well as Tomasz Lipiec, Minister of Sport, Marek Ziolkowski, Deputy Speaker of the Senate and IOC Member and former Olympian Irena Szewinska. Ryzbard Grobelny addressed the EC to stress once more the preparedness of his city.

2011 Winter Universiade
After the lunch break, the bidding candidates for the 2011 Winter Universiade were given the floor. The city of Erzurum (TUR) first, by draw. Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin , Governor of Erzurum and Mayor of Erzurum, Celattin Guvenc and Ahmet Kucukkler were back tot promote their city, since they also bid for 2009. The Erzurum Bidding Committee even had a live link with the supporters of the bid in Erzurum. Final candidate was Maribor. President of SUSA, prof. dr. Otmar Kugovnik, Mayor Franc Kangler and Minister of Education Milan Zver, together with NOC President Janez Kocijancic and University Maribor Rector Ivan Rozman were present to promote their city.
Finally at the official attribution ceremony, staged in the Teatro Regio Torino in the city centre, FISU President Killian announced the winners of the 2011 bids. The 2011 Winter Universiade has been attributed to Erzurum, Turkey. The 2011 Summer Universiade has been attributed to Shenzhen, China.
