CTI Meeting in Belgrade, Day 2

June 14th, 2008

CTI, Vice-Chair, Alberto Gualtieri, leading the final CTI Meeting

This is already the last day of this CTI meeting for the individual sports in Belgrade. Today it was time for our technicians to make their reports and to describe how they will manage the preparation work for their sport. One by one, all our CT Chairs were invited to take the floor and to make a detailed situation of what they saw the day before. They also spoke about the way they will work with the local people of the Organising Committee in charge of their discipline. All the FISU delegates were very satisfied with their inspection visits and they all underlined the fact that the 2009 Organising Committee is very experienced in terms of sports knowledge and know-how. Indeed the city of Belgrade already organised numerous international competitions. This time, this will be their biggest event but they seem to be ready for it.

Like always, one of the big issues will be to avoid overlapping with other big competitions and events organised during the same period in order to guarantee a good participation at our Universiade. At this time, FISU will still have to work closely with the concerned International Sports Federations to find the best way to finalise its sport programme. All the delegates were also very satisfied with the distance between the venues and the Athletes' Village. Indeed, it seems that the transportation of athletes and teams will not be a problem in Belgrade during the Universiade. Some of the venues will have to be renewed but the Organising Committee promised us to finalise these renovations on time.

General Director UB2009, Sinisa Jasnic thanked all the CT Chairs for their excellent collaboration and informed them that they were welcome to come to Belgrade when they felt the need to make an inspection visit. He added that the OC will keep their promise to celebrate the 60th anniversary of FISU and the 50th anniversary of the Universiade. He also thanked the FISU staff and OC members and said that the Athletes’ Village will be an excellent venue for the athletes and will remain a great legacy.A visit of the Athletes' Village was organised in the afternoon. During this inspection, the FISU delegates had the opportunity to see the construction progress of this magnificent project. According to our Secretary General-CEO, Eric Saintrond, this will be the most fantastic Village ever offered to our student-athletes. This 13.8 hectares lot is located in the new part of Belgrade, very close to a big shopping centre. It is surrounded by broad roads that provide rapid connections with all parts of town and therefore with all of the sports facilities and the airport. This optimal situation was crucial in choosing the lot for the construction of the Athletes' Village. The village will be divided into three zones: mixed, international and residential. The construction began in June 2007. This is the largest construction site in town, and also in the country and it is certainly among the most important in all Southeast Europe. The Delta Invest Company is in charge of the project – Mace Company is the contractor for the construction itself. Total surface area of the buildings will be 260,000 square meters. Two buildings will be devoted exclusively to offices, 14 will be blocks of private facilities and offices. There will be 16 underground parking lots and a full road infrastructure. 1788 apartments in various structures will provide accommodations for a total capacity of 10,944 guests. All observers agree that the village will be magnificent and we are looking forward to seeing it finished. The OC will move to the Village next autumn and the full construction process will be finish in early June.
