Former WU Stars Win Medals at 2007 WC Speedskating

At the recently held ISU World Allround Speed Skating Chanmpionships in Heerenveen, Holland, which took place from February 9th to 11th, the Speed Skating Star of the 2007 Winter Universiade, Olympic and Universiade Champion Enrico Fabris (ITA – 2005 WU Bronze 1,000 m, Gold & UR 1,500 m, Gold 5,000 m; 2007 WU Gold & UR 1,000 m, Gold, UR & TR 1,500 m, Gold & UR Relay) got bronze on the 1,500 m and 5,000 m. He ended twice in 4th position on the 10,000 m and the 500 m. Fabris was not the only former WU star to be present collecting medals. Dutch skater Carl Verheijen (1997 WU – Gold & UR 5,000 m & 10,000 m) also won two silver medals, on the 5,000 m and 10,000 m. Paulien van Deutekom (2005 WU – Gold & UR 1,500 m & Silver 1,000 m) ended on the fourth spot in the women’s 3,000 m competition. Other former WU participants at these All-round WC were Renate Groenewold (NED - 1997 WU – Gold & UR 1,500 m & 3,000 m, Gold 5,000 m), Ben Jongejan (NED – 2007 WU – 12th 1,000 m), Luca Stefani (ITA – 2007 WU Gold & UR Relay), Mateo Anesi (ITA – 2005 WU 5th 1,500 m, 2007 WU ) and Ivan Skobrev (RUS – 2007 WU Silver 5,000 m).
