December 9th, 2008

Mr. Killian and Mr. Gjeloshaj

From December 3rd to 5th, the Principality of Monaco welcomed the 2nd edition of the Peace and Sport International Forum. More than 300 participants attended this Forum. FISU President, Mr. George E. Killian attended the meeting accompanied by Mr. Kolë Gjeloshaj, the FISU Director of Education and Development, Chief of staff to the President.

‘Sport and Peace – Organisation pour la paix et le sport’ was created in Monaco by its President, Joël Bouzou, An Olympic Medallist and a Modern Pentathlon World Champion, he is the current Secretary-General of the Modern Pentathlon International Union (UIPM), a member of the World Olympians Association (WOA) and an Advisor to HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. The organisation is a Monegasque Organisation set up in the Principality of Monaco under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Sovereign Prince Albert II of Monaco. The head of the state was in attendance every day during the sessions.

The mission of ‘Sport and Peace’ as it is mentioned on their website (http://www.peace-sport.org/) is: ‘to use sport to educate individuals and communities across the world about peace. Although sport and political leaders are all aware of the peaceful values conveyed by sport, cooperation between them remains too rare. Confronted by complex situations, they often find it difficult to set up the necessary synergies to solve issues. With this in mind, Peace and Sport acts to promote sport as a basis for efficient political actions and a tool for peace.’

The participants were not only the main actors of the international world of sport but also present were international and national political leaders, representatives from NGO’s that needs to come together to create the necessary synergy to develop local projects. The programme included 6 sessions: - Sport as a geopolitical instrument for peace; - Harmonising action by government with action from the sports movement; - National Olympic Committees – International Federations and National federations interact for peace; - What role can sport play in areas of tension?; - Sport, partnerships and corporate social responsibility; - The challenges of sustainability.
