2013 SU Candidate Vigo Visits FISU HQ

Today April 9th, a delegation of the Vigo Bidding Committee visited the FISU Headquarters. Vigo, Spain is one of the three candidate cities to host the 2013 Summer Universiade, the other two being Gwangju, Korea and Kazan, Russia. The Vigo delegation was headed by the city Mayor, Mr. Abel Caballero and was comprised of the following persons: Mr. Alberto Gago, Rector of the University of Vigo; Mr. Santiago Dominguez, Deputy Mayor of Vigo; Mrs. Lucía Morales, Spokesperson of the Partido Popular; Mrs. Anxela Bugallo, Autonomous Government of Galicia; Mr. Roberto Alvarez del Blanco, Advisor to the Candidacy of Vigo; Mr. Franco Cobas, President of the Royal Yacht Club of Vigo and Mr. José Luis Pego, Executive President of the Caixanova Savings Bank. ‘The people of Vigo are thrilled with this candidature for the Universiade’, Mayor Caballero said to FISU Secretary-General Eric Saintrond. ‘I can assure you that everybody is behind the bid as one block. All political parties, all industries and business companies, small and big and of course all our citizens.’

Vigo is the 4th industrial city of Spain after Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia and harbours one of the biggest car factories in the world. Sport also plays an important part in the lives of its citizens as the city counts more than 300 sports clubs and has produced Olympic athletes participating in all Olympic Games. Vigo is also a University city with the University of Vigo, which is 500 years old and counts 22,000 students. Overall the city hosts 75,000 students. ‘The University of Vigo is ready for the Universiade’, said Rector Gago. ‘We are proud to say that the University of Vigo is an active participant in the Erasmus Project, thus welcoming students from all over Europe. The University will be an important partner for the Games.’ After the meeting gifts were exchanged and FISU Secretary-General Eric Saintrond gave some detailed information about the Inspection visit of the FISU delegates to Vigo, which will take place from April 17th to 21st.


CEDU Representatives Meet President Killian

On Monday, April 7th, FISU President George Killian welcomed representatives of CEDU, the Spanish NUSF at the FISU HQ in Brussels. Manuel Fonseca de la Llave, General-Director for Sports of the Spanish Ministry for Education and Science and Antonio Montalvo de Lamo, Deputy Director-General for Sports Promotion confirmed the support of the Government for the VIGO Candidature.
