May 7th, 2008

Canadian Interuniversity Sport, as the Canadian representative of FISU, announced the appointment of the Canadian chefs de mission for the 2009 Winter and Summer Universiades. Mr. Peter Baxter, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Wilfrid Laurier University, will be Canada’s chef de mission at the 24th Winter World University Games in Harbin, China (January 18-28), while Mr. Dick White, Director of Athletics at the University of Regina, will lead the Canadian delegation at the 25th Summer Games in Belgrade, Serbia (July 1-12). “Peter and Dick will be exceptional chefs de mission. Both have experience and leadership qualities that are key to the position. They will be outstanding ambassadors for Canada and will greatly enhance the student-athlete experience,” said Joe Morissette, CIS International and Sport Programs Services. Baxter has been head of Wilfrid Laurier’s Athletics department since 1998, and previously occupied a similar position at the University of Toronto in Mississauga (1991-98). His international experience includes serving as a team manager with the Canadian national canoe team, founding the only Olympic Weightlifting Centre in the Metro Toronto Area, and hosting the 1995 Pan American weightlifting championships. In 2003, Wilfrid Laurier’s women’s hockey team hosted Team China for an exhibition game and, in 2007, Baxter helped secure an exchange program with Nanjing University in China for Wilfrid Laurier coaches and student-athletes. Wilfrid Laurier’s women’s and men’s curling teams will represent Canada at the 2009 Winter Universiade. They booked their tickets to Harbin by winning the inaugural CIS championships in March. White is Director of Athletics at Regina since 1995. He served as CIS President from 2005-2007 and was re-appointed in 2007. He previously acted as President of both the Canada West and Great Plains regional associations. White was Canada’s chef de mission at the 2005 Winter Universiade in Innsbruck, Austria, and was Canada’s delegate to the FISU General Assembly in Izmir, Turkey, in the summer of 2005.
