WUC Badminton 2008 in Braga: Team Competition

The first round of team competitions started this morning at 9:00am. In this round, Asia proved to be at its best with the victories of Japan, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and China. Group A, with Portugal and Poland, opened the competition. Portugal won the first two matches (Men’s and Women’s Singles), but in doubles Poland was stronger. Poland leads and at 1:00 p.m. will play against Germany. Group B completed the first round in which Japan faced Macau and won in all categories: Men’s singles, Women’s singles, Men’s doubles, Women’s doubles and mixed doubles. In group C, Indonesia defeated Spain 4-1. Only in the Men’s singles match, Spain defeated the Indonesian team with a very good match its player, Pablo Abian Vicen. The competitions of group D disputed by Chinese Taipei and Great Britain, were clearly marked by the victories of Chinese Taipei. The same happened with one of the teams of Group E in competition. China has been the winner of all the matches at this morning. The second round of the competition started at 1 pm. Curiously, with games that put in confront several countries of the same continent. Russia, France, Poland, Koreia, Japan and Thailand won their games. Poland defeated the Germany team, in the second round of group A. Germany won the first two matches, but Poland won the games of doubles matches. The winner of the round was only known at the last match, mixed double match. In a balanced game, the polishes were stronger and won for 2-1. No surprises in group B. In confront between Thailand and Macau, the Thailand team won in all categories. In the other game of the group, the disequilibrium between Japan and Malaysia wasn’t so high. However, Japan won four in five games. The unique victory of Malaysia was in mixed couples. In group C, Korea defeated Canada for 4-1. Only in the mixed couples match, Canada defeated the Korea team with a very good match. The Korean team was superior and only in double mixed Canada won, when the winner was already known. In group D, the Russia won advantage over Great Britain. In a very competitive group, the victory of the Russians put Great Britain in the last place. The decision of the first place is between China Taipei and Russia. After the first round, the games in group E processed between Switzerland and France. In the five games disputed, the strongest selection was the French team. Switzerland only won one game, the women's couples. The Portuguese team won its matches (Women and Men single, mixed couple). During the match three games were balanced, maybe because athletes were in good physical conditions. With these results, home’s team confirmed the qualification to next round. In group C Indonesia and Korea didn’t give chance to their group opponents and confirmed their favouritism. The Korean team defeat Spain for 5-0. Indonesia won too for 5-0 against the Canadians. In group D China Taipei won showed all their superiority. In the final of the first competition day, the Chinese Taipei team is in the first position, followed by Russia. The winner of the round was easy to discover. China Taipei dominates all the categories. The games were unbalanced, with the Chinese Taipei proved all their superiority. Chinese Taipei won the five matches. In group E China won again but now against France for 5-0. The leadership in this group is occupied by Chinese team. In the second position is France.
