2008 WUC Handball: Day 1
July 5th, 2008
The afternoon of the first day of matches of the 19th edition of the World University Handball Championship opened with the defeat of the Australian men's team, beaten 50-11 by the Czech Republic. The clear superiority of Czechs was observable from the beginning with an Australian team that gave away 5 goals in 4 minutes. A successful physical and technical attack by the Czechs, a defence not in particularly precise and very foul of Australia that give away lots of penalties to the opposing team. At the same time in the Palasport of Oderzo the matches of the afternoon began with the women's game Poland – Romania. Poland made immediately speak of itself, but only because, at the end of the match, it's an excellent Romania that stand out with the result of 32-27. A balanced and spectacular match where the teams overtake themselves several times. But is the defence that makes the difference: indeed, the Romanians position a wall front the area and they are successful in going to +4 at little minutes to the end and Poland, a little dull, can't react. The first day of matches ends with the draw between Italy and Austria, in the men's tournament: 29-29 is the final result.
