Universiade Tennis Star Shines in Australian Open

One Chinese Taipei university tennis player had an excellent performance in major tennis events recently. Chia-Jung Chuang as wild card rookie in women’s doubles, beated the defending champs duo from China and advanced to the final of the 2007 Australia Open Tennis Championship. She, along with her partner, Yung-Jan Chan made history as to become the first players from Chinese Taipei to appear in a Grand Slam final. Chuang also won the silver medal in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. At the 2005 Izmir Summer Universiade, she grabbed 2 gold medals, including mixed doubles and women’s doubles and accounted for two of the six gold medals the Chinese Taipei delegation won. Especially, both Chuang and Chan won 8 gold and 7 silver medals in 16 games since May, 2005 when they first became partners. Chuang majors in the Department of Sport Science Balls at Taipei Physical Education College. Her continued outstanding performance has already been noticed by many corporations in Taiwan, particularly Taipei Smart Card Corporation, a company which issues E-pass services for the mass transportation system in Taipei. The corporaton plans to meet with Chuang and put her photo on the card, maybe she will become the third elite athlete in Chinese Taipei whose picture will feature on a Taipei Smart Card.
