1st World University Women's Futsal Championship
Vitoria, Brasil - September 7th to 13th, 2008
A First in Brazil

Brazil vs. Portugal
The first Women's World University Futsal Championship was a great success. It took place in Vitoria, Brazil, the country of futsal as well as football. It must be said the organizers put their hearts into making this first edition a reference. Everything was thought out in the smallest detail to facilitate the participants’ stay and offer them the best possible technical conditions. Nine countries met in this competition, representing three continents (America, Asia and Europe). There were a total of 102 players, 42 officials and 11 umpires for this championship.
Iran vs. Costa Rica
The general level of the players was really excellent, which bodes well for future editions. The best team, Brazil, was a shade above. Well organized and trained, it showed an unusual sense of tactics and the players had truly exceptional athletic qualities. This was not the case for some of the other teams that sometimes had trouble playing several matches in a row and finished the competition "on their knees". This is a criterion that these countries should take into account in the future editions if they hope to have a good position on the podium. The teams were split into three groups of three for the preliminary rounds. The two best teams in each pool and the two best third-places then met for the attribution of places 1 to 8. A total of 21 matches were played during the competition. The Opening Ceremony was very friendly, ending around the table with a meal for all participants.
Big crowds at the matches
The tournament attracted considerable interest and a large audience (about 20,000 people in all – 2,500 for the final) attended the various matches. There were also a large number of representatives of national sports federations. The final was broadcast live on national television. In addition to an interest for the local team, the public was fascinated by the participation of the Iranian team. Its smooth, well controlled game was a treat for the spectators who also appreciated the unusual equipment of the players from this country. It should be noted that the flexible spirit of FISU was what made it possible for this team to wear different equipment.
BRA vs. URU
The women behaved very well throughout the tournament; in all 39 yellow cards and four red cards were given. At the final, there were only three yellow cards, which is very few. The fair play award went to the team from Uruguay for its exemplary behaviour. The final opposed the local team to Portugal. As we already mentioned, Brazil won the gold medal on a score of 11 to 4, clear proof of the strength of this team. The Portuguese team suffered from a lack of experience at this level. The match for the bronze medal went to China, over Costa Rica, on a score of 3 to 1. On the whole, the tournament was quite spectacular with an average of 8.3 goals per match. With 47 goals marked, Brazil of course came out on top, to a large extent thanks to Luciléia Minuzzo who marked 14 of them on her own!
