Weightlifting

The History of Weightlifting  in FISU

Weightlifting entered the programme of the FISU World University Championships in 2008 with a first edition organised in Komotini (GRE), which welcomed 159 weightlifters from 32 countries.
Since then, two other editions were attributed on two continents, and each attracted around 100 participants . The 3rd World University Weightlifting Championship will take place in Eilat (ISR) in 2012.

FISU Regulations

The weightlifting competitions will be organised in accordance with the most recent technical regulations of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). In any dispute, the English text will be regarded as authoritative. The programme and duration of the competitions are fixed by the Executive Committee in agreement with the Organising Committee and the CTI. The competitions will last four (4) days and will include:

Men: 56kg, 62kg, 69kg, 77kg, 85kg, 94kg, 105kg,+105kg
Women: 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 75kg, +75kg

The competition must include the following sequences:

  1. the Snatch
  2. the Clean and Jerk


Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in Snatch, Clean and Jerk, and Total.
Each country is authorised to enter a maximum of twenty (20) persons, from which eight (8) men competitors and seven (7) women competitors spread over the different categories with a maximum of two (2) competitors per category and five (5) officials.

Minimum Requirements for Weightlifting

The Organising Committee must provide, for exclusive use, suitable facilities to stage the weightlifting competition, as approved by the weightlifting CT. The IWF Bye-Laws, Technical Rules and Manual for Organisers of World Championships, as applicable, must be followed.

  • At least two (2) separate changing rooms for competitors.
  • The OC must provide a warm-up area in accordance with the IWF requirements
