The Nordic combined events are organised in accordance with the most recent technical regulations of the International Ski Federation (FIS). The FISU regulations are always set up on the recommendation of the FISU Technical Chair and the FIS Technical Delegate in close cooperation with the Committee for Sports Regulations (CRS), and they are approved by the FISU Executive Committee. The programme and duration of the competitions are fixed by the Executive Committee in agreement with the Organising Committee and the CTI.
Duration of the competition – 8 days maximum
Nordic combined has become a very exiting competition requiring excellent skills in two different disciplines: ski jumping and cross-country skiing. Today’s Nordic combined competitions are organised only for men as follows: Individual Gundersen competition: one (1) round in ski jumping on normal hill followed by a 10km cross-country race / team Gundersen competition: three (3) participants per team, one (1) round in ski jumping on normal hill followed by a 3x5km team relay cross-country competition / individual Mass Start competition: 10 km cross-country race followed by 2 (two) rounds in ski jumping on normal hill: the first (1st) round of the ski jumping competition is in the reverse order of the cross-country results. The running of competitions is always supervised by the FISU Technical Chair for ski jumping, the CT Chair for cross-country skiing and the FIS Technical Delegate, who chair all technical meetings concerned. The two different jumping hills and tracks must follow the requirements of the International Ski Federation and go through a homologation process.
* Ski jumping and Nordic combined will be moved to the programme of optional sports/disciplines after the 26th Winter Universiade in 2013 in Trentino. In 2014, ski jumping and Nordic combined will be included into the official programme of the World University Championships.
Nordic combined is one of the oldest Winter Universiade disciplines. Its history goes back to the traditional International Winter Weeks which were held in 1951 in Bad Gastein, 1953 in Saint Moritz, 1955 in Yugoslavia, 1957 in Oberammergau and 1959 in Zell am See. Nordic combined had its premiere at the first edition of the Winter Universiade in Chamonix, France, in 1960. From the 3rd edition of the Winter Universiade (1964) in Spindleruv Mlyn (CZE) onwards, the new rules of FIS to calculate the points for Nordic combined have been applied. Until today’s competitions Soviet and Japanese students have kept showing their international class. We must not forget to mention still active athlete Georg HETTICH (GER) who participated in the 2005 Winter Universiade in Innsbruck and won the gold medal; he then reached the 1st place in Gundersen and the 3rd place in Sprint at the 2006 OWG in Torino. Many others Olympians also participated in Winter Universiades. So far, Nordic combined has been 23 times in the Winter Universiade programme since 1960.
