FISU Mourns Co-Founder Ignazio Lojacono

The FISU Headquarters has been informed that FISU Honorary Member Ignazio Lojacono (ITA) has passed away at the age of 87. During the major part of his life, Mr. Lojacono has been involved in university sports, being the Vice-President (1947-1957) and President (1957-1995) of CUSI, the Italian Member Association of FISU.

In this capacity Mr. Lojacono was very much involved in the foundation of FISU and the editing of the first statutes (Merano 1948) as well as the organization of the 1st International University Summer Sports Week in Merano in 1949.

As CUSI President Mr. Lojacono was also a key person in staging four of the seven Universiades in Italy: 1959 SU Torino, 1966 WU Sestrière, 1970 SU Torino and 1985 WU Belluno.

Mr. Lojacono was also the founder of the University Sports Centre (CUS) Bari which he presided for 61 years. In 2002 he staged the 2nd World University Flatwater Canoeing Championship in his beloved Bari.
