Freestyle Skiing

FISU Regulations

The events are organised in accordance with the most recent technical regulations of the International Ski Federation (FIS). The competition programme for men & women includes: Ski Cross, Aerials, Aerials – Team Events, Moguls, Dual Moguls, Half Pipe. NOTE: Ski Cross + at least one (1) other of the above-mentioned disciplines shall be chosen by the OC as an optional discipline. The FISU regulations are always set up on the recommendation of the FISU Technical Chair and the FIS Technical Delegate in close cooperation with the Committee for Sports Regulations (CRS), and they are approved by the FISU Executive Committee. The programme and duration of the competitions are fixed by the Executive Committee in agreement with the Organising Committee and the CTI. Duration of the competition: 8 days maximum

Freestyle Skiing Competitions

Until today the freestyle skiing competitions have been organised for men and women as follows: Ski Cross, Aerials Individual, Aerials Team Events and Moguls – Individual event. In 2003 Ski Cross was organised by FISU for the first time and it was included into the FISU Regulations. The running of competitions is always supervised by the FISU Technical Chair for freestyle skiing and the FIS Technical Delegate, who chair all technical meetings concerned. All slopes (venues) must follow the requirements of the International Ski Federation (FIS) and be approved by FIS to host international events.

History of Freestyle Skiing in FISU

Freestyle skiing is a very young discipline where skiers compete against each other in groups of four to six on a freestyle cross course that is specially built. Freestyle skiing has recently gained more attention from the public and it has experienced phenomenal growth also in the international student sports community. Freestyle skiing continues to evolve. This exciting snow discipline was partly (Ski Cross) organised for the first time in the history of the Winter Universiade during the 22nd edition in Innsbruck, Austria, where it was a great success in both men’s and women’s categories. Many former and still active good alpine skiers participated in this freestyle skiing event. At the 25th WU in Erzurum, Moguls were added on the programme of the freestyle skiing competitions in addition to Ski Cross. This competition had an enormous success also in terms of worldwide broadcasting. Men’s results: 1st: Aleksandr Kerner (RUS) /2nd: Evgeny Mikhailov (RUS) / 3rd: Denis Moisseyev (KAZ) / Women’s results: 1st: Darya Rybalova (KAZ) / 2nd: Irina Pisarevskaya (RUS) / 3rd: Alena Zueva (RUS). Freestyle skiing has been in the Winter Universiade programme since 2005 and has been organised three times. In the fall of 2007, Luc KOHLY (France) was elected as the first FISU CT Chair for freestyle skiing.

Optional Sports

Please refer to FISU REGS. SEC. C4 - 12.40 (12.42) for further details regarding the technical requirements for the appropriate sport chosen by the Organising Committee. Optional sports will have to fulfil the requirements of the FIS. The competition venues must be approved by the FIS and FISU.
