16th World University Championship Cross-Country

Mauquenchy, France - April 5th to 6th, 2008

Golden Women's Team GBR

On April 6th, the 16th edition of the World University Cross-Country Championship took place in Mauquenchy, France. The race track was muddy; the weather conditions were terrible with snow showers right up to the start of the race and temperatures as low as -2 °C. However, the aficionados will claim this is typical cross-country weather…

A though race!

Both the men's and women's races were very tough due to an extremely muddy track. Some athletes arrived at the finish without their shoes as they were lost in the sucking mud pools along the track! In the women's race Irish Fionnuala Britton (22'39') was leading the whole race up to the last stretch when Fay Fullerton (GBR) passed her in a sprint and beat her with 3 seconds on the clock leaving the silver to Britton who improved her performance of 2006 where she ended on the 6th place. Ikram Zougliali (MAR) came in third clocking a 22'41”.

The men's race was also decided with a sprint which was won by Moroccan Najim Elqady (36'14”) who bettered his 4th place in 2006. The silver went to Aussie Liam Adams (36'19”) and the bronze to German Denis Hohl (36'24”). The Team Race Victory went to France for the men and to Great Britain for the Women.
