10th World University Chess Championship
Novokuznetzk, Russian Federation - March 4th to 10th 2008

The first WUC to set the ball rolling was the Chess Championship which took place in Russia, a country with a fine chess tradition. So the best student chess players travelled to Novokuznetsk from March 4th to 10th to participate in the 10th edition of the WUC Chess.
As it was widely predicted, the hosts took the first prizes in all the major nominations of the World University Chess Championship. Dmitry Bocharov and Irina Vasilevich were crowned the champions in the men's and women's tournaments respectively and Russia also left the other competitors far behind in the team classification.
Chess Legend Karpov
There were few doubts about the team-winner even before the start of the championship as four men's Grand Masters and an imposing girl's quartet made the chances of the other teams very slim. The tournament only proved it: in the first six rounds the Russian men lost points only in the games with each other, the girls answered with a strong finish. Former World Champion and chess legend Anatoli Karpov visited the tournament to encourage the student-players.
